A new report from global travel market research group Phocuswright forecasts significant growth in the global travel industry, projecting a 6% to 10% increase in travel this year and next. As travel demand continues to recover post-pandemic, the report highlights key factors driving growth, including a surge in online bookings and expanding markets in both Europe and Asia-Pacific.
Phocuswright’s latest Global Travel Market Report emphasizes the growing dominance of online travel, which is expected to expand by around 10% through 2026. As consumers increasingly shift to digital platforms for booking flights, accommodations, and other travel services, the report predicts that this trend will continue to reshape the industry in the coming years. Online travel agencies (OTAs), direct bookings through airlines and hotels, and mobile apps are driving much of this growth.
While North America continues to hold the title as the largest regional travel market, Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions are leading the charge in online booking growth. According to the report, these regions are outpacing North America in terms of online adoption, thanks to expanding internet penetration, mobile access, and a younger, tech-savvy demographic. Asia-Pacific, in particular, has seen rapid growth in online bookings as emerging markets like India and Southeast Asia increasingly use digital platforms to book travel.
The top five travel markets worldwide include the United States, China, Japan, Germany, and France. However, Phocuswright forecasts that the UK is set to break into the top five by the end of this year, driven by a surge in international travel and the growth of its domestic market. The US remains the single largest travel market, benefiting from strong domestic demand and significant international arrivals.
Phocuswright’s analysis shows that online bookings will account for 65% of all travel bookings globally by the end of next year. This marks a significant shift in consumer behavior, with traditional travel agencies and offline booking methods continuing to decline in favor of digital platforms. The report highlights that online travel platforms, including Google Travel, Expedia, and Booking.com, are increasingly shaping consumer choices and influencing the way travelers plan and book their trips.
The report also touches on several key trends reshaping the travel industry. Mobile bookings continue to grow, with travelers increasingly relying on smartphones and apps to book on the go. Innovations such as AI-powered recommendations, personalized travel itineraries, and contactless services are becoming the norm, offering travelers a more seamless experience. Additionally, sustainability is playing a larger role in travel decisions, with more consumers prioritizing eco-friendly options when booking flights, hotels, and tours.
With the rise of online bookings, competition among travel providers is intensifying. Airlines, hotels, and OTAs are vying for consumer attention through aggressive pricing, exclusive deals, and enhanced loyalty programs. This competitive environment is driving down costs for consumers, while also encouraging travel companies to innovate and improve the overall booking experience.
Phocuswright’s report concludes by stating that the outlook for the global travel market remains positive, with steady growth expected through 2026. As digital tools continue to transform the travel landscape, online travel is set to become the dominant mode of booking, offering consumers greater convenience, choice, and flexibility.
